Although there did seem to be some of it about here and there so it is a bit surprising she hasn't run into it since after arriving here.

It's-- well, it's dairy. Like milk, or more specifically cream. But it's in a cold, semisolid state that melts when you eat it. It's very sweet! I believe I've passed a few shops since I arrived.

I believe it's only a matter of preference, really. You should try both methods at some point, I think. The advantage to eating it in a bowl however is that you can add other food to go with it. Such as peaches, you see. Chocolate is probably the most common additive.
