CANON JINBA
CANON POINT Part 2, Chapter 10

HISTORY: As no wiki exists, here is a brief summary.

The world of JINBA is that of Japan- the one key difference between this setting and the actual historical one being the existence of jinba, (essentially centaurs). Creatures half man and half horse who lived deep in the wilderness, they were revered in the past as gods, divine creatures who occasionally shared their wisdom with humans, taught them to harness the properties of nature, and could be called upon to deal with dangerous beasts. For many centuries man and jinba lived in harmony, rarely meeting or coming into conflict... until humans truly discovered war. Soon enough the thought was born to harness the power of the creatures of legend... and over time, the peaceful race of jinba became nothing but tools to humanity.

Part One of the manga deals with the Warring States period (16th century), when countless local warlords were locked in power struggles with each other over land, political power, and control of key resources. The drawn out period of unrest led to high demand for military forces, particularly the prized jinba. At that point, jinba were considered nearly on par with how one might consider an expensive horse- one sees that it is fed, well cared for, and equipped with good tack, but in the end... it isn't human. It's an animal. Years of using jinba as tools of war made most humans lose their regard for the creatures as equals, and with this stripping of their humanity came the sort of behavior one might expect, including mental, physical, and sexual abuse. The capture, training, and breeding of jinba was a difficult yet lucrative trade, with military leaders willing to spend exorbitant amounts of money on the right creatures.

Part Two of the manga takes us to a thirty year time skip, to the beginning of the Tokugawa period. In the wake of the wars ending jinba have become more integrated into human society, in more progressive areas even working alongside humans doing work such as construction, farming, courier work, and the like, but there remains a lot of tensions between the races, and older generations still haven't let go of their prejudices or grudges.

Konoha was born at the tail end of the war period, and she was yet young when both her parents died. She was taken in by an older human couple with no children of their own, and raised by them in a small farming village on the edge of the mountains. She considers them her parents by this point, and loves them dearly. To help support them, she went to the nearest city and sought out Sha Gozen, a jinba renowned in the area for being able to secure work for her fellows.

Since then, she's been working as a foreman in the lumber industry, directing human workers on the mountain and hauling timber back and forth from the mountain forests to the mills below, then hauling the treated wood back up to building sites. It is in this capacity that she encounters the main characters, two of whom come to work under her.

In the story she has taken on something of an unwitting mentor role to the two, both of whom grew up in harsher times, by encouraging them to judge humans as individuals rather than based on their past experiences. While working towards the construction of a shrine on the mountain, Konoha gets involved in several hijinks, including being chased by wolves, having her mother completely embarrass her in front of her first crush, and several rousing pep talks.

She's just your average young Tokugawa era country gal! ... With four hooves.

PERSONALITY: Konoha is, thanks to the efforts of her parents and the luck of the era she was born into, somewhat innocent and cheerful in comparison to many of the characters in JINBA. She's somewhat uncomplicated when it comes to her thought processes, never having been formally educated nor in much need of challenging herself mentally over puzzles or moral dilemma, but she's not particularly bothered by her simplicity, either. She finds happiness in family, a full belly, and a job well done, and her ambitions for her life and future are realistic and somewhat unambitious- to work, to provide for her family, and to one day have a family of her own, likely without ever really leaving her hometown area.

Having been born at the end of wars, she's quite aware that she's lucky to have escaped the days in which jinba were treated far more harshly than they are now, but lacks an actual understanding of just how bad it was for her older brethren because she was raised by humans. Though she truly loves the humans who raised her, considering them her parents, she's definitely lost out on certain cultural points and understanding that she would have learned had she been raised by her natural parents.

Having lost them at a young age did make her somewhat resilient, even with her human parents' pampering, and Konoha seems to consider it her duty to in turn be a good daughter and cheerful girl. She's almost always smiling, ready to laugh, and eager to please or show kindness, and her human mother's chatty, well-meaning busybody nature has obviously rubbed off on her adopted daughter. If she can help someone, she will, and if she can invite them home to dinner with her family, then why not! She also tries her hand at advice when she can, but her rather simple approaches to things often gets her laughed at... though she sometimes does actually help.

When she's comfortable, Konoha is chatty and excitable, rather open and always one to speak her mind rather than beat about the bush, whether that means expressing her emotions or lecturing someone. She talks to herself, too, particularly when she's worried or anxious about something. Having not grown up around men of her species, she can be terribly awkward and easily embarrassed around male jinba, but seems to have slightly less issues with humans- probably because she doesn't really view them as easily as potential partners due to certain biological differences.

As part of her duties to help support her parents and also not wishing to disappoint the jinba who hired her, Konoha takes her day job at the lumber mill very seriously. Despite her relatively young age she's very capable and knowledgeable (when it comes to forest paths and how to transport timber anyway), operating as the site foreman on the mountain, and can work beside rough and tumble human laborers years her senior with little issue, considered by a lot of the male crew as something like an energetic, bossy little sister.

But she does show her age on occasion, particularly when she encounters the unexpected. Despite her sunny disposition, she can be reduced to tears by the things that affect any teenage girl. First heartbreak... being chased by wolves...

Acatalepsy is sure going to be a wild ride.

CANON POWERS: None of a magical nature.

OTHER: As a jinba (centaur), Konoha is possessed of the best features of both human and horse. Physically she is much stronger than a human woman of comparative size to her top half would be, capable of lifting a man off his feet with one hand, or of carrying hundreds of pounds on her equine back. As a stockier, draft breed example of her species, she is stronger than she is fast, but is still far faster than a human.

As negative consequences of her anatomy, she is not capable of laying down on her side for a long period of time without difficulty breathing and discomfort. It is an exceedingly difficult and lengthy recovery should she suffer leg injuries. It is also implied that jinba are at least somewhat affected by the breeding seasons that rule the reproduction of their more fully equine cousins.
